Yesterday we moved our Code Club kit from Barrule House in Ballasalla to our new headquarters in Douglas, and we’re right in the centre, a couple of doors down from Java Express and just on top of Miquando. This will be a start of a new era for us and an opportunity to deliver more courses and better sessions. We’ll be using the base to run courses all over the Island (Foundation Radio course coming up in Ramsey soon) and also on other days through the week, so please bear with us while we get ourselves organised. You can read more about our move on our press release here
Our next set of classes revolve around a small device called Arduino. Arduino is an open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs – light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. We have a number of project kits and will be running a sequence of 4 2-hour sessions building a number of projects together. We’ll be running 2 separate courses side by side, one on Saturday between 4:00pm and 6:00pm and one on a Wednesday between 6:00pm and 8:00pm, followed by a new one in May. Booking links are here:
- Isle of Man Code Club – Arduino – Saturday sessions – starting 1st April
- Isle of Man Code Club – Arduino – Wednesday sessions – starting 5th April
- Isle of Man Code Club – Arduino – Saturday sessions – starting 6th May
We still have spaces for the Wednesday and May sessions, so if you want to learn more, click the links above! Please keep in mind that these courses assume you already have some coding basics, so anyone under 10 or with no coding experience will struggle to keep up.
We have lots more courses in the pipeline, but will be using April to get settled into our new quarters. As always, we’re always looking for volunteers to help, both to deliver quality learning, but also to help with more practical tasks like helping us get organised and helping us with fundraising. If you can help in any way, please drop me a line at owen@codeclub.im and I’ll be happy to share more what we’re doing. On that note, I’d like to say a huge thank you to the Moovers team, who are just the best Isle of Man Removals and Storage people ever! They donated their time and energy to helping pack up all our 3D printers, VR headsets, laptops, Lego Mindstorms kits and much much more and getting them safely and securely in our new location. Thanks guys! We owe you one!
